Hi loves! I hope you’re all doing well🤍

I’m so ready to pause, sit down with a cup of coffee, and have a chit chat with you guys. These are some of my favourite posts because it allows me to connect with y’all [and vice versa] on a more personal level.

Over the past couple of weeks there’s been a lot of exciting things that have brought positivity and more importantly motivation into fruition for me! I can’t wait to share these moments with you, alongside the crazy happenings that take place inside the McKay household that I think will make you laugh [or at least smile, lol]. Cosy up with me and let’s catch up!

Our little Penny is officially a women. Last weekend she went into heat and it’s been a long week of cleaning, I’ll tell ya that. We’ve never had to deal with anything like this because we were able to get Bella fixed before she experienced a heat. With the pandemic and everything being backlogged we haven’t had the same situation with Penny, but hopefully this is the one and only heat we’ll have to navigate through!

We finally got Crave and I regret not subscribing to it sooner! It has so many of our favourite throwback shows like 16 and pregnant, friends, and the Big Bang theory! It’s been so nice to have some thing else to watch other than the repetitious shows on Netflix.

We also spent much needed time finishing our master bedroom, it was the only room we really haven’t focused on decorating for some odd reason. It looks so great and I can’t wait to reveal it in a more detailed post!

Getting crave and making our room feel put together and cosy were definitely essentials for lockdown 2.0 here in Ontario that has been extended into February. We haven’t been effected too much but like everyone else we are patiently awaiting the vaccine to become available to the general public. I don’t even remember what a normal world feels like but I’m hopeful it’s within reach.

This year is the year of consistency and so far it’s been really rewarding, especially when it comes to social media and growth. I’ve been posting daily on my IG grid and within two weeks I went from around 400 followers to just over 900! I’ve also gained some new readers since implementing a concrete posting schedule, planning out my content ahead of time allows me to really focus on putting out quality content!

One of my goals is to become a full time blogger while I study for a new career and the process has been a learning curve but I’m starting to see some progress! I was finally accepted to WordAds which places ads on my blog and whenever it gains traction I earn commission! I want to thank everyone for reading my blog posts and supporting my goals by being okay with seeing some ads- you’re the reason why I do this!

A few other cool things I’ve started to do is incorporate hygge inspired home on a new IG account @hyggehomeaesthetic— an extension of Cosy Culture Co! All you have to do to be featured is use the hashtag #cosyculturehomes! I also post a lot of the decor that’s seen in these gorgeous homes on the Cosy Culture Home LTK! If you’re more into fashion and my everyday looks, follow my main LTK here.

In other happy news babe got her new car finally. The process with the insurance company took over a month [long story] and I’m so glad we can move on and no longer have to share a car! Some type of normalcy has been restored, despite the world still being weird, lol.

What have you guys been up to the past couple weeks?

How to Stay Organized in 2021

Helllllo lovelies! I hope you’re all well and ready to take on 2021!

I know that many of us have struggled with our mental health in 2020- this year I’m doing everything that I can to keep a positive mindset and a factor that goes into that is feeling organized and put together.

Today I thought that I’d share some of the tools and strategies that I’m implementing in 2021 to keep myself on track and organized! I’m saying goodbye to my scatter brained ways while also keeping my expectations realistic which I think is very important. The less stress you put on yourself, the better. Let’s dive in!

Calendars are something I did use in the past but I didn’t use efficiently. I’d put things in my calendar on my phone and then simply forget about them. I would even set multiple reminders to alert me days and hours before an important event and often times the reminders wouldn’t pop up on my phone- thanks apple lol.

I prefer google calendar rather than the calendar that comes with iOS for multiple reasons but here’s the coolest features:

  • appointment and event alerts that actually work
  • easily add your daily to-do list and check off items as you go
  • you’re able to add goals that can be customized to your preferences
  • add reminders for whatever you desire

Not only did I make the switch to google calendar, I also have multiple calendars on the go; one on our fridge, the google calendar on my phone, and in my daily agenda. I found that having multiple places that remind me of appointments and my to-do lists is more beneficial than having one calendar with a ton of reminders. It’s also very convenient because no matter where I am I always have access to one of these three tools!

Lately going through my inboxes was such a chore because not only do I have multiple email accounts [on different platforms] but I was subscribed to a bunch of stores and newsletters I never read. The first thing I changed was how I viewed my emails and the second vital thing that I did was an inbox cleanse, unsubscribing to content that didn’t interest me anymore.

I don’t recall where I came across the brilliant little emailing app Spark but it has seriously been a game changer! The nifty app integrates all of your email accounts into one place and has a smart filter that sorts through your incoming emails and categorizes them based on the subtext. Whenever I open the app my emails from each account are categorized together depending on if it’s directly from a person, if it’s a notification from social or if its a subscription/newsletter!

Now that going through my emails doesn’t seem like a daunting task, I set aside an hour each day to read through each email and respond where necessary. I find that the hour before bed is my favourite time to do this- of course if I receive an email that’s pressing throughout the course of the day I will respond right away but typically it’s an end of the day task.

2020 taught me a lot about the value in needs vs wants. This really helped to shed light on my finances and the way I was spending money, as many I was unable to work during the global shut down and had to shop smarter not harder. A big change that we had to make as a household was making more meals at home as opposed to ordering out multiple times a week.

One of the tools that helped me break down where I needed to cut back my spending was the Mint app. It’s definitely the best budget app I’ve used to date and allows you to see your monthly spending habits as well as where you are spending the most and where you could afford to spend a little more. For me the fast food/take out category was over my budget multiple months in a row, where things like clothing were consistently under the monthly budget.

One of the most important things when it comes to organizing your social media content is planning ahead. When you know in advance what you want to put out there it makes it easier to stick to a schedule because you aren’t scrambling last minute trying to create content on the same day you want to post it- this often leads to content that isn’t quality.

What I’ve done is started to compile all of my content ideas into categorized lists for each social media platform. From there I go over each list, take the content I want to post and slot it into my agenda on scheduled dates. This has really helped when it comes to blogging and setting up a posting schedule which is something I’ve struggled to nail down in the past. Remember that when it comes to social media and putting out content, consistency is key.

I hope you were able to take away some inspiration to get organized this year! Let’s all take a deep breath and reset, rework what didn’t work in 2020, and do the things that will help keep your mind right!

Talk soon loves

Raising the bar in 2020

Alright alright, I know I’m almost an entire month late with this one. But better late then never right?

I’m so excited to share the humongous goals I’ve set for 2020- this is going to be a year full of accomplishments and moving on to bigger and better things.

Be more consistent

When it comes to my blog and specifically social media, the one thing that I lack is consistency. I mentioned this a little bit in my last coffee convo’s post, but I’m reiterating it here in my goals for the year.

When it comes to blogging, IG, Twitter, etc– there are periods of time that I find I’m super active and posting daily (or a couple times a week when it comes to the blog) and then there are periods of time that I completely disappear from the social scene.

My goal for 2020 is to stop disappearing randomly on all of you. I’m going to aim to schedule posts so that I’m posting at least once daily on all the socials, and twice weekly on the blog. Scheduling posts ahead of time will help me keep up with providing content, and it will also help me to create content at times when my creativity is flowing instead of waiting for ideas to come when the day arrives.

Grow my audience

Over the course of 2020 I want to grow my audience and following on the blog and all my other social networks. I love that I have this platform to share all my crazy thoughts, connect with you all, and experience great opportunities! I consider you all close personal friends and I want to continue to inspire you, help you with DIY’s, and always keep you up to date on the latest happenings in my crazy life.

In this coffee convo’s post I talked about monetizing the blog, and when you monetize your blog there are new curve balls that you have to figure out how to navigate. One of the curve balls that I’m currently facing is monetizing the blog through WordPress Ads.

Another goal is to grow my audience over the course of 2020, increase my views and following, and get approved for WordPress Ads. This will be awesome financially, ya girl is still paying off those student loans and saving for a house!

Read more books

Last year I honestly picked up a book once or twice and I sure didn’t come close to completing my 2019 Reading Challenge on GoodReads. This year I want to read more books and it should be easy because I have 4 or 5 new (aka thrifted) books currently sitting in a box that I have yet to read.

My goal for 2020 is to read at least 5 books, follow along my profile on Goodreads and make sure that I’m making progress!

Put more away in savings

Last year was an okay-ish year when it comes to putting money away into my savings account. This year I’m kicking it up a notch and working extra hard to save that down payment money for our house!

Every paycheque that I receive this year, I am automatically putting 20% of it into my savings account. This way I know that I’ll be contributing every two weeks and it will be an amount that I can afford while still being able to pay bills and buy coffee/takeout or whatever else I want/need.

I’ll be sure to update you all throughout the year to let you know how the 20% method is panning out, I have pretty high hopes!

Pay off student loan

For anyone else who went to post secondary and had to get a student loan, you feel my pain. So worth it, but gawd does it ever totally suck. And the interest?!? Don’t even get me started.

I am so hopeful that this will be the year that my student loan will officially be paid off. I have been out of school for two full years now, but just recently my Dad and Step-Mom offered to start contributing to help pay it down faster- they are honestly the best ever and I couldn’t be more grateful.

Grow the Etsy shop

I talked about growing the Etsy shop and what’s to come a little bit in this post, it’s going to be a big year for our little shop with lots of new products!

As you all know we are moving (in less than a week, eeekkk!) and the new place has an awesome shed that we are turning into our little workshop. Bigger decor pieces are coming your way and we are so excited.

Along with bigger decor pieces, I am experimenting with stationary products– I have the honour of doing the stationary for one of my very good friends wedding next year so stay tuned for all the prettiest paper things.

We’re doing decor, we’re doing stationary, we’re sowing lots of things and we’re rolling out knitted + crocheted products! So excited and so busy. Stay tuned.

Complete my Doula training

This March I’m starting my doula training and I can not wait! The course is online, and it is 16-weeks long although I actually have up to two years to complete it. It’s a very interactive course and I’m so excited to meet like minded individuals who are just as passionate about the maternal field as I am.

My goal is to complete the course within the 16 weeks that it’s running and have my first client by the end of 2020! I know that it’s going to be hard work and require a lot of focus but I believe that among all the other things that I have going on I’ll be able to prioritize and get it accomplished.

2020 is going to be a crazy, amazing, chaotic, lovely year full of growth and prosperity– I can’t wait to see what it has in store. What your goals for 2020? Let me know in the comment section below!

As always,

2020 is going to be such a big year- check out all my goals!

Coffee Convos: hello 2020

Hello loves! ♥︎

I can’t believe that we are officially into 2020, an entirely new decade. I am so excited for the new year and I have so many exciting things to look forward to- a new year full of new things and new ideas coming to life.

This coffee convo is all about whats coming up in this new year, and I am so excited to share all the big news. Come join me, grab a nice hot cuppa and curl up for a catch up!

We’re moving again

Tristan & I are moving into a new place and we couldn’t be more excited! The space we are in now worked for the meantime and it was a great experience for our first time out on our own but our new place is definitely an upgrade.

We are moving this February and are in full on brainstorming mode for how we want the space to look! We’ve been constantly browsing through furniture and decor pieces for weeks now, and even managed to score a few things on sale throughout the holiday season.

Starting my doula training

The countdown to March is on, because that is when my doula (aka maternal support practitioner) training starts!

Ever since deciding what I wanted to do with my life during my last year of high school, working within the maternal world was always my plan and to finally see that coming to fruition in 2020 is absolutely soul-fulfilling.

Jumping into blogging and social media

This year I want to stay consistent when it comes to blogging and keeping up with social media. Over the course of this year I’ve found that there have been times that I’m very active on the blog and socials but then theres times where I completely ghost the internet world.

I want to figure out a proper blogging schedule over here on Nicole’s Niches so you all know when to expect posts and I’ll stop keeping you guessing! I also am making a vow to check in on the socials at least once daily.

new look + New series on the blog

If you haven’t noticed, I have officially dropped the “wordpress” from my URL. We are self hosted baby! Along with purchasing myself a domain, I also refreshed the look of Nicole’s Niches with a brand new theme. If you haven’t had a chance yet be sure to check it out!

With a brand new shiny domain and completely new look- comes new series that will be launching on the blog. I’m sure you all know by now that I’m extremely passionate about Home + Decorating so inspired by that I’m starting a new series on the blog that I’m sure will blossom into many others. Stay tuned for the launch, until then it’s a under wraps.

Podcast possibilities

Podcasts are seriously one of my favourite things to listen to, and I have always been intrigued when it comes to starting my own. I have thought about it a lot, have picked out a name, and even know exactly who I want as a co-host. However getting said person to agree and commit to said podcast is still in progress.

My favourite types of podcast to listen to is two friends (or group of friends) who just bullshit about everything and anything, tell funny stories about their lives, and spill the tea on celeb gossip and that is exactly what I want to do.

I’m hopeful that this dream of mine will come alive in 2020, I’m manifesting it so hard y’all.

Now you’re all caught up! Whats been going on lately with you guys? Let me know in the comment section below 🙂
