Hello fam! I think it’s safe to say that we are entering spooky season and I hope that you’re taking full advantage of it!
Ever since I can remember I’ve been terrified of horror movies, I can do a little scare but not a lot. I was the type of kid who would watch a scary movie and not be able to sleep at night, now as an adult I can endure a horror film but I definitely don’t prefer it.
Family friendly halloween scares are more up my ally. If you are like me or have little kiddo’s that aren’t quite ready for the horror genre yet, opt for these movies instead!
Hocus Pocus
My all time favourite go-to halloween flick is definitely, hands down, without a doubt, Hocus Pocus by Disney. It’s quite an old movie filmed in 1993 but it still is comedically relevant and all around a feel good film. Based in spooky Salem, three witches are brought back to life after 300 years and watching them navigate how different this century is will be sure to give you a good laugh.
There isn’t too many familiar faces in terms of the acting talent, however you will notice a very young Sarah Jessica Parker as one of the main three witches! You can find Hocus Pocus available for streaming on Disney+ or buy a copy from amazon.
Corpse Bride
I remember going to see this movie in the theatres when it was first released, I would have been around seven years old so it’s safe to say that this flick is definitely kid-friendly.
You know it’s going to be a quality movie when Tim Burton is the director (does he ever not deliver?!) and this was no exception! I still watch it to this day every now and again and am blown away by the animation for the time period it was made in.
The premise of the movie follows a character named Victor who accidentally gets married to a skeleton named Emily. He’s then whisked off to the land of the dead, and though he wishes not to be there the story evolves into Victor being the one to set Emily free and it’s a very happy ending indeed!
You can find Corpse Bride on Amazon Prime video with a Starz subscription or buy a copy on amazon.
Twitches 1 & 2
I don’t know about you but these movies give me major Family Channel vibes. I still to this day adore these movies and I think its because I love stories about witches and this story features twin witches, although at first they don’t even know that they are sisters nor witches!
It’s a magical story and you get to watch as the twitches discover themselves, their powers, and where they came from- a kingdom that in the end they end up having to save.
You can watch Twitches 1 & 2 on Disney+ or buy a copy on amazon.
Casper
The friendliest ghost around! You can’t help but love this little ghost. It’s a very funny and feel good film where a new family (an afterlife therapist and his daughter) moves into a house that is haunted by several ghost that get up to all kinds of no good. When they try to get rid of the ghosts, the daughter actually ends up befriending Casper.
Everything works out in the end, and I guarantee that your kids will love it so much that they’ll be wanting to watch one of the many many sequels!
Casper can be found on amazon prime video or you can buy a copy on amazon.
Gather up the famjam, pop some popcorn, snuggle up and throw on one of these movies for a spooky family night- minimal scares!
xx
